She Cranes beat Malawi to set up final with South Africa in 2024 Netball Championship

Uganda’s National Netball team, The She Cranes Thursday booked their place in the final of the 2024 Africa Netball Championship after defeating Malawi 51-43 in a hard-fought semi-final.

The victory sets up the She Cranes to play South Africa in the final, scheduled for today (Saturday, December 14), at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund, Namibia.

The match was a hard-fought one for the She Cranes, who bounced back after a slow start. Malawi dominated the opening quarter, leading 14-8, as Uganda struggled with coordination.

However, the She Cranes regrouped and turned the game around. By halftime, the scores were level at 23-23, thanks to tactical substitutions from the coaches. Sandra Nambirige replaced Hanisha Muhammad, and Mercy Batamuliza came on for Joyce Nakibuule, stabilizing Uganda’s attack and defence.

Uganda found their rhythm in the third quarter, leading by 7 goals at 39-32. The She Cranes maintained their momentum and sealed the win with a strong performance in the final quarter, finishing 51-43.

In the other semi-final, South Africa defeated Zimbabwe 63-41 in a one-sided affair, setting up a rematch between the two teams.

Both South Africa and Uganda have each won the championship three times, with Uganda’s victories coming in 2014, 2017, and 2018.
