Windhoek, (NAM):- South Africa’s SPAR Proteas have been crowned the 2024 Africa Netball Cup champions, defeating Uganda’s She Cranes 65-50 in a dominant final.
The victory marked South Africa’s fourth title in the prestigious competition, cementing their legacy as the continent’s top netball team, with previous wins in 2013, 2019, and 2021.
The final, played at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund, Namibia, saw South Africa seize control early on and maintain their commanding lead throughout the match.
Uganda, led by towering goal shooter Mary Cholhok Nuba and captain Irene Eyaru in the goal-attacker role, started strong but struggled to close the gap. The team also featured Gloria Aya as wing defence, Faridah Kadondi as a goalkeeper, Sandrah Nambirige at goal defence, and Mercy Batamuliza at wing defence.
The match began with South Africa taking a 16-12 lead after the first quarter. The Proteas extended their advantage to 30-24 at halftime, leaving Uganda with plenty to play for in the second half.
However, Uganda could not catch up as South Africa outscored them 20-9 in the third quarter, pushing their lead to a comfortable 50-33.
As the final quarter ended, it became clear that South Africa was set for the win. The Proteas’ consistent performance saw them finish strong, with a 65-50 win.
This victory further solidified South Africa’s dominance in African netball, while Uganda’s She Cranes were left to settle for the silver medal, their third in the competition’s history.
In individual accolades, Uganda’s Magret Bagala was named the Best Centre Player of the Tournament, a well-deserved recognition for her exceptional performances throughout the competition.
Meanwhile, it was a historic double victory for South Africa, as their men’s team also claimed the 2024 Africa Netball Cup title with a resounding 60-39 win over Eswatini.
The men’s team, led by a brilliant all-around performance, won all four quarters; 17-12, 32-23, 46-29, and 60-39 capping off an outstanding year for South African netball.
