Uganda’s Broken Promises: Four decades of NRA/M misrule

By George Ofwono

For nearly four decades, the National Resistance Army / Movement (NRA/M) has systematically lied to the Ugandan people, enriching themselves while the nation crumbles.  The 2021 election, their sixth mandate since 1986, was another blatant display of this cynical manipulation.

They promised to secure our future, but their true aim was securing their own futures at the expense of the very voters who empowered them.  We, the Ugandan people, are to blame for repeatedly allowing these “goons” to ruin our lives.

This current term of office has been a farcical spectacle of corruption and mismanagement.  Uganda’s legislative assembly, once a symbol of democracy, has devolved into a den of backroom deals.  The vulnerable Karamojong people were cheated out of their vital iron sheets (mabaati). Millions of shillings were squandered on the absurd purchase of rats, while a single goat fetched a sum that would feed a village for months.

Taxpayers’ money funded the ludicrous transport of paperwork between Kampala offices.  Government officials flaunt their ill-gotten wealth, constructing opulent mansions far beyond the means of their salaries.  Even the President’s son, a serving military officer, holds lavish political rallies funded by the very people he supposedly serves. The scale of this corruption is staggering and seemingly endless.

Meanwhile, our nation’s infrastructure deteriorates. Roads are in a state of disrepair, hospitals and schools are dilapidated, and essential social services are on the brink of collapse. Had it not been for the relatively strong foundations laid by a few UPC establishments in the 1960s and early 1980s – foundations the current regime has desperately tried to dismantle, yet some resistance remains – the picture of our country would be far bleaker. The NRA/M is not governing; it is over-milking the country, leaving a legacy of neglect and despair instead of development.

Fellow Ugandans, we must learn from the past. We cannot repeat the mistakes of 2026.  When the NRA/M comes to us again with their deceitful slogans – whatever empty promises they concoct this time – we must remind them of their broken pledges and hold them accountable.  We must vote them out of power, inflicting a penalty for their decades of betrayal.

As we consider who can rejuvenate our nation from the state it was left in by Dr. Apollo Milton Obote in the early 1980s, let us remember that only the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) possesses the foundational strength and the vision to rebuild.

In 2026, the UPC will return to the ballot, offering a plan to rebuild Uganda based on the principles left by Dr. Obote. We urge you to consider our party, a firm and reliable alternative.

As the Dhopadhola saying goes: “UPC Odwoko dongo win Kendo” – UPC is back – and “Uganda Wa chewi win ngeyi Uganda mowan Odongi kendo” – Uganda is being rebuilt with the old foundation. Let us together build a better future for Uganda.
