Eight dead after taxi crashes into Fuso truck on Jinja-Iganga Highway

Iganga, (UG):- At least eight people have been confirmed dead while others sustained injuries in a road crash when two vehicles, a Taxi and a Fuso collided head-on, early morning at Bulanga along the Iganga-Jinja highway.

The crash, registered on Monday, December 16, 2024, at around 4 am involved a Taxi registration number UBP 140D which was carrying passengers from Iganga to Kampala and a Fuso registration number UAX 761B which was ferrying packed milk of Daily Top whole milk brand from Uganda’s capital Kampala to border district of Busia.

The first respondents of the accident attributed it to the Taxi driver who was trying to overtake, before colliding head-on with the Fuso vehicle.

It is reported that three people died on the spot while from the other five, some died along the way to the hospital and others succumbed to injuries on admission for medication. The deceased persons included seven male adults and a female adult.

Some of the deceased have been identified as Arajabu Menya, 30, a Tipper driver in the Bulaga trading center, Kakaire Rajab, 23, a resident of Iganga and Hassan Kiige, 30, who was a businessman and resident of Nabitende in Iganga district. Other victims were yet to be identified by press time.

The victims who survived with injuries were rushed to Iganga General Hospital at Nakavule and some were later referred to Jinja Regional Hospital and Mulago National Referral Hospital while the bodies were still lying in Iganga Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

The residents of the area (Bulanga) have asked authorities to install speed humps along the point saying a number of people have lost lives at the same spot resulting from frequent accidents.

The wreckage of the vehicles which were involved in the accident was towed to Magamaga police station, as investigations into the matter went on.

However, the Traffic Police spokesperson, SP Micheal Kananura attributed the fatal accident to reckless driving from both motorists.
