Kampala, (UG):- Police in Kampala have confirmed apprehending four more suspects bringing the number to six in custody detained over connections to the tragic murder of Jacob Akansasira, an IT officer attached to Kyambogo University.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on December 5, 2024, the police received a report regarding the attempted murder of Akansasira, a 40-year-old male adult employed by Kyambogo University and resident of Kiwatule, Nakawa Division, Kampala City.
“On December 1, 2024, at around 08:00hrs, he [deceased] reportedly left to purchase groceries but did not return to the guest house until around 06:00hrs on December 2, 2024. His wife received a call from a boda-boda rider informing her that her husband had been beaten near the Catholic Shrine in Namugongo and was in critical condition,” Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma revealed during a media briefing on Monday, December 16, at Naguru Headquarters.
Rusoke explained that “the victim was initially taken to Angelina Medical Centre in Namugongo and later referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital.” Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on December 11, 2024.
The police investigated the incident and visited the crime scene in Kigambo, a ghetto located in Buloli zone, Namugongo Division. Preliminary findings indicated that he was lynched by a mob that suspected him of theft.
As investigations deepen on circumstances surrounding Akansasira’s tragic death, Rusoke revealed that four more suspects have been arrested adding to the initial two who were arrested last week.
“On December 13, 2024, police arrested four individuals believed to have been involved in the mob violence and still searching for more suspects,” ACP Kituuma remarked adding that their particulars can not be revealed at the moment.
Rusoke further warned the societies to have turned to mob as the final solution for suspected criminals. “When someone is in your hands, don’t rush to mob him because some of them are of sound mind. First ask him or her who is he, where is he coming from and later hand him to us to help us in getting more suspects,” the police mouthpiece stressed.
Meanwhile, police said it is increasing its operations to sweep out criminality during this festival season, and that several operations are conducted by joint security forces in various parts of the City.
Police have also cried to local Authorities like KCCA to help in semi-complete structures which have become criminal spot zones. “These semi-complete structures have become a hub for criminals so local authorities should take responsibility and make sure these buildings are worked on,” Kituuma said.
