Uganda leads the pack at 2024 East Africa University games in Kenya

Kisumu, (KE):- The 2024 East Africa University Games, currently underway at Maseno University in Kenya, have witnessed exceptional performances from Ugandan universities, with Bugema University stealing the spotlight in the football category.

As the defending champions of the 12th edition of the East Africa University Games held in 2022, Bugema University’s football team has maintained its dominance in the 13th edition, starting with a resounding 4-0 victory over the University of Dar es Salaam.

Goals from Captain Kagonda Charles, Nyenje Abdul who netted a brace, and Aziz Opio Aziz sealed a commanding win for the Ugandan side.

In their second match, Bugema University continued their winning streak with a narrow 1-0 victory over United States International University (USIU), with striker Ssentongo Suleiman scoring the lone goal of the match.

Coach Nyanzi Meddy expressed satisfaction after the wins, acknowledging his team’s solid start to the tournament. “We’re happy with the results, but we know the competition will get tougher. We must stay focused,” he said.

The success wasn’t limited to football alone. Bugema University’s Volley team also impressed by winning all of their two matches on the day.

The netball team, participating in the tournament for the first time, secured two victories as well, marking a strong debut.

Other Ugandan teams also performed well. Kampala University rebounded from a 1-0 loss to the International University of East Africa (IUEA) in their opening match to beat Maseno University 1-0, with Lakomakech Bill scoring the decisive goal.

Meanwhile, MUBS edged out the University of Dodoma 1-0, while the match between Uganda Christian University (UCU) and MUBS ended in a goalless draw.

Other notable performances included Mountains of the Moon University’s 2-0 victory over Ardhi University and a goalless draw between Mountains of the Moon and Bishop Stuart University.

The men’s basketball team from UCU defeated Kenyatta University 55-44, while their volleyball team triumphed 3-0 over the University of Dodoma, with set scores of 25-13, 25-16, and 25-19.

In volleyball, Kampala International University (KIU) had a mixed performance.

After losing 3-1 to hosts Maseno University in the opening match, they bounced back with a win against Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST). With one more win, KIU will secure a spot in the knockout stages.

As the games continue, Ugandan universities are showing strong performances across multiple sports, proving that they are forces to reckon with in East African university sports.
