Denis Omedi’s remarkable rabona goal made a splash at the 2024 CAF Awards in Morocco, even though it didn’t clinch the prestigious Goal of the Year accolade.
The Ugandan forward’s stunning strike scored during the FUFA Super Eight clash against KCCA on August 10, 2024, at Lugogo finished sixth in the fan-voted competition, falling short of the top spot
The award, which saw football fans from across the continent participate in the voting, was ultimately won by Angola’s Agostinho Cristóvão Paciência, popularly known as Mabululu.
His breathtaking goal against Namibia in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16, which helped Angola to a 3-0 win, claimed 121,192 votes. Omedi’s sensational effort earned remarkable recognition despite earning only 13,765 votes.
In an emotional statement following the results, Omedi expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received. “Special thanks to the multitudes who voted for me for this coveted award,” He said
“Albeit the fact that we didn’t win it, we made history regardless,” he added. “I believe this is just the beginning of greater things to come. (Jeremiah 29:11). Yours faithfully.”
Despite not securing the top prize, the 2024 CAF Awards saw a massive display of African footballing talent, with Omedi’s nomination standing out as a proud moment for Ugandan football.
“Dennis, you have done extremely well to reach these heights. Keep heart,” said FUFA President Hon. Jessim Moses Magogo.
Kitara FC, where Omedi plays, also celebrated the achievement. “Omedi getting nominated for the CAF Awards 2024 was enough for me as a win,” said Deo Kasozi, the club president.
Despite missing out on this award, Omedi’s stunning strike remains in contention for the FIFA Puskás Award, highlighting its global recognition.
