Police impound California Bus over roadworthiness

Police in Arua have impounded a California Bus for being road unworthy and putting the lives of passengers at stake.

The Kampala-bound Scania bus, registration number, UBF 016L with 69 passengers was intercepted at Enzeva – about six kilometres along the Arua-Kampala road at a snap checkpoint.

It was being driven by 52-year-old Stephen Bada, a resident of Muni Cell, Arua City. He was briefly detained at Arua Central Police Station but later released on police bond pending advice from the state attorney while the passengers were advised to seek alternative transportation.

According to Collins Asea, West Nile Police spokesperson, the bus had previously been deemed unfit for road use in September 2024 under inspection reference TSD 07/16/13/2024 by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

Despite warnings from the district traffic officer (DTO) and the IOV, the bus company failed to address the mechanical issues.

The management and proprietor of the California Bus Company have been summoned to report to the police today Tuesday to account for the bus’ condition, which police claim endangers passenger lives. In light of the festive season, police have intensified road safety measures.

Asea highlighted that West Nile police have deployed checkpoints on major routes to ensure compliance with traffic safety rules. Police urged road users to prioritize safety to minimize risks during this busy period.
