Kampala, (UG):- The Ministry of Local Government has yet again extended the term of office for administrative unit councils, including Local Council I (LC I) and Local Council II (LC II) leaders for another period.

Hon. Raphael Magyezi, the Minister of Local Government, in the notice confirmed the extension indicating that the term of office for these council leaders, which was set to expire on December 30, 2024, has now been extended for an additional period not exceeding 180 days.

“Notice is hereby given to the general public, pursuant to Regulation 12(d) of the Local Government Councils Regulations, that the term of office for administrative unit councils expiring on 30th December 2024, is extended for a period not exceeding one hundred and eighty days from 31st December 2024,” the statement read.

The extension, according to Magyezi aims to ensure continuity in leadership and governance at the grassroots level while providing the necessary time to prepare for upcoming administrative activities.

The announcement is contained in General Notice No. 2827 of 2024, under the provisions of Regulation 12 (d) of the Local Government Councils Regulations as stipulated in the Local Governments Act, Cap. 138.

The announcement also serves as a formal notification to the general public and all stakeholders involved in local governance, and that further details about the implications of this extension are expected to be communicated in due course.

This is not the first time the LC1 and LC2 elections have been delayed. On July 4, 2024, the government extended the elections for a third time within one year, citing a lack of funds and the need for approximately Shs50 billion to conduct the elections.

The current LC1 and LC2 leaders were elected in 2018 across 10,595 parishes and 70,626 villages.
