Kenya, (EA):- Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) secured its 13th Eastern Africa University Games football title Friday with a 2-1 victory over Makerere University in the final in Maseno, Kenya.
The match kicked off with pressure from both teams, but it was UMU who struck first.
In the 12th minute, Ivan Agamile’s powerful shot hit the crossbar, and Calvin Peter Emayu was quick to pounce on the rebound, giving UMU a 1-0 lead.
A spirited response came from Makerere in the 23rd minute when Male Musa capitalized on a defensive lapse, scoring from close range to level the match at 1-1 into halftime.
The second half remained evenly matched until the 65th minute, when Agamile, after a well-timed pass, slotted home to restore UMU’s lead, making it 2-1.
Despite Makerere’s efforts to find an equalizer, UMU held firm, securing their victory and their place in Eastern African university football history.
The victory marked a memorable journey for Uganda Martyrs University, who had previously eliminated the defending champions, Bugema University, in a tense quarter-final. The Saints also triumphed over Ardhi University 2-0 in the semifinals.
In other results from the Games, UMU Flames fell short in the Men’s Basketball final, losing 52-50 to Uganda Christian University (UCU), who claimed the gold medal.
UCU also dominated in men’s volleyball, defeating Maseno University 3-0. Additionally, UCU took the gold in women’s volleyball, defeating Kenyatta University 3-0.
Ndejje University tops the medals table with 32 gold medals, followed closely by UCU and Makerere University.
