Mbale, (UG):- President Museveni Friday pledged to inject Shs100 million into each of the three Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCO) of sex workers in the Bugisu subregion as part of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government’s effort to ensure Ugandan households enter into the money economy.
The President made the promise while presiding over the Bugisu Youth Symposium held Friday, December 20, 2024, at Mbale Secondary School grounds in Mbale City.
“Do you want the malayas (sex workers) to also have their Sacco…..but the question is, do they know each other in the whole of this town?…. Okay! I have given you Shs100 million,” Mr Museveni said as he responded to the request made by Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo, the Manager Office of the National Chairman, Ms Hadijah Namyalo that the majority of the sex workers are youth and have many clients.
“Your Excellency, I will not shy away from making this request since you are our grandfather. I request you to give each of the sex workers’ Saccos at least Shs100 million. After all, I see people bringing you fake Saccos and you give them money,” Ms Namyalo earlier said.
At the same symposium, President Museveni tasked the youth in Bugisu Subregion to join the government efforts in ensuring the implementation of free education. “You (the youths) need to insist and say stop school charges in government schools. Wake up everybody and let us implement UPE and USE. If we had implemented UPE and USE well, we would be very far by now,” he said.
The President added that the government will go after the civil servants and other people who are stealing PDM money to frustrate government programmes.
“They have been deducting the money from the banks. I have stopped this. The bank charges will be paid by the government. For you, you will get your Shs1 million,” he said, directing those who have irregularly benefitted from the PDM programme, to pay back the funds immediately.
“During my tour, I have discovered that there are people who are not qualified for the PDM. Those ones got it yet they are not supposed to get it. They should pay it back immediately. Those made a mistake of taking what is not theirs,” he ordered.
He also pledged that the government would locate the remains of some of the bush war freedom fighters in Mbale who lost their lives during the 1981-1986 struggle that brought him to power, and give them a decent burial as well as support the families of the victims.
The event organized by ONC Kyambogo was part of the President’s country-wide tour to monitor the performance of the Parish Development Model (PDM) and other wealth-creation programmes in the subregion.
