Kampala, (UG):- The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, has expressed confidence in the successful hosting of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in East Africa.
The CAF president, who was welcomed by the leadership of the Uganda Football Federation (FUFA) on his official visit to Uganda on Friday, emphasized the importance of the tournament for the region.
“I’m happy to be in Uganda again. I have always said that this place feels like home, and therefore I’m not a visitor today,” Dr Motsepe remarked. Despite acknowledging challenges, particularly regarding football infrastructure, the CAF boss remained optimistic about seeing a successful tourney in the East African land.
“I have all the confidence that these will be sorted before the tournament kicks off in February next year. I have the assurance from the Heads of State of the three host nations.” He stated.
Dr Motsepe stressed the broader benefits of hosting such tournaments, noting that football serves not only as a sport but as a catalyst for development, infrastructure improvement, unity, tourism, and trade.
He further pointed to the long-term significance of the tournament in preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.
Following his address to the media, Dr Motsepe and his team toured key venues, including Mandela National Stadium, where they inspected the playing surface, dressing rooms, media centre, and training pitches.
The CAF President also paid a courtesy call to Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Annet Anita Among Magogo, before meeting with Uganda’s President, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, at State House in Nakasero.
CHAN 2024 will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania from February 1 to February 28, 2024, marking a historic collaboration between the three East African nations.
