Man, 53, found dead in police cells after domestic dispute

Pallisa, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Pallisa District are investigating a case where a 53-year-old man was found dead in police custody following a domestic dispute that turned violent in Kibaale Town Council on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

The deceased, identified as Moses John Odongo, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at Kibaale Police Station at approximately 7:30 PM, just hours after his arrest.

According to ASP Innocent Nuwagaba, the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute between Odongo and his wife of 10 years, Rose Okurut. The couple, who had one child together, had been experiencing marital problems after Okurut allegedly began an extramarital relationship.

The situation escalated when Odongo visited his former residence in Agurur cell to collect his belongings. Upon finding another man in the house with his wife, a confrontation ensued.

During the altercation, Odongo allegedly injured his mother-in-law, Regina Akurut, with a blunt object.

Local authorities, led by the Agurur cell chairman Benedict Omutu, facilitated Odongo’s arrest at approximately 6:00 PM. He was detained at Kibaale Police Station under reference number 11/21/12/2024 but later found dead under unclear circumstances.

Police have initiated investigations under case file PAL.GEF.025/2024. The scene remains preserved pending a coroner’s investigation by the Chief Magistrate of Pallisa.
