Gogonyo MP Derick Orone highlights milestones achieved in 2024

Pallisa, (UG):- Gogonyo County Member of Parliament Hon. Derick Orone Monday outlined a detailed account of his achievements and milestones reached in 2024.

During his weekly press briefing on Monday, Hon Orone outlined how he has worked to fulfill the promises he made to his constituents during his campaign. He emphasized that beyond his legislative and oversight duties, he has remained committed to fulfilling the promises he made during his campaign.

With environmental degradation a growing concern, Orone initiated a tree-planting campaign, providing tree seedlings and maize seeds to 500 farmers in the district. He also supported persons with disabilities, partnering with the OJ Foundation to deliver 80 wheelchairs to beneficiaries.

“I made it clear that I am the Member of Parliament for everyone in Gogonyo, without discrimination. That’s why I supported women’s SACCOs from the 120 villages in my constituency, each with 100 members, providing UGX 100 million in seed capital. Additionally, 2,000 youths from the sub-counties of Kaukura, Apopong, Gogonyo, and Obutet received UGX 21 million in support, and 400 boda boda riders received UGX 29 million, which I personally handed over at Akuoro Primary School,” he explained.

Hon. Orone also took significant steps to boost the agricultural sector, which employs the majority of the local population. He invited Vice President Rtd. Major Jessica Alupo Epel to Adal Primary School in Kaukura Sub-county for the handover of four walking tractors, alongside the distribution of 2,000 hoes.

During the event, Vice President Alupo pledged further support with an additional 10,000 hoes for farmers, and Orone assured that he is following up to ensure delivery.

In the realm of faith, Orone spearheaded fundraising efforts to complete 20 churches, including the Kachango Church of Uganda and Amoni COU.

“Additionally, I informed my people that I would help the youth find employment abroad. Over 2,000 youths from Gogonyo and beyond are now working in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and other countries,” he noted.

On education, Orone’s lobbying efforts resulted in the establishment of Obutet Seed SS and Kaukura Seed SS, ensuring that each sub-county now has a secondary school in line with government policy. Construction of Kaukura Seed SS is underway, with the government allocating UGX 500 million for building infrastructure.

Orone also distributed tailoring and hairdressing equipment to two youth groups, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.

Gogonyo County in Pallisa District has faced challenges in primary school performance, but Orone partnered with Innovation Africa, an NGO, to provide solar panels to improve learning conditions in local schools.

In response to the floods that recently hit the area, Orone coordinated emergency food relief for residents in Apopong, Gogonyo, Obutet, and Kaukura sub-counties, receiving support from the Office of the Prime Minister.

On matters healthcare, Orone highlighted the availability of a standby ambulance in the county, as well as his efforts to secure a government ambulance for Pallisa District. He is also working to establish a Health Centre IV in Gogonyo.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Orone wished his constituents a joyful festive season and reminded them to prepare for their children’s return to school in February 2025.

“Don’t overspend during Christmas. Stick to a budget that suits your means. It’s not sustainable for a family accustomed to half a kilogram of food to suddenly consume five kilograms. Be mindful of your spending,” he advised.

What Constituents Say

Mr Papakonyang Oscar from Apopong commended Orone’s dedication, saying, “While other leaders engage in verbal fights, Gogonyo remains peaceful and focused under MP Orone’s leadership.”

Apulansi Imeesa, the LC1 Chairperson of Agule Village in Gogonyo Sub-county, praised Orone’s support for women’s SACCOs, noting a decrease in domestic violence as a result.
