Kampala, (UG):- The Police at Kampala CPS Monday said they were investigating the circumstances under which an officer on a police patrol vehicle shot and killed a truck driver in a scuffle incident along Sezibwa Road near Nakasero State Lodge in Kampala.

Police identified the killer cop as PC Charles Bahati who opened gunfire at the deceased; Julius Ssemwaka, the driver of a truck registration number UAX 480C.

“Following the incident, PC Bahati fled the scene with his weapon and is currently on the run. A search operation is underway to locate him. We have commenced investigations into the matter and will share details later,” the police statement read.

An eyewitness who was at the scene at the time the shooting happened described the scene as horrific saying it all started when officer Bahati, on a police patrol vehicle with other officers, instructed Ssemwaka to reverse his car to let them pass, but he was unable to due to heavy traffic behind him.

“The officer jumped out of the car, ordered the driver to reverse, and a heated argument ensued. The officer shouted, ‘Go back.’ Fearing for my safety, I tried to escape as I feared a gunshot. Then I heard a gunshot, and the driver fell dead,” Kasumba Kassim, a boda boda rider narrated.

“The officers attempted to calm him down, but all efforts were in vain. After shooting the driver, the officer fled on a boda boda, taking the gun he used,” he added.

Kasumba further noted that the officers were not part of any convoy or escorting a government official, but it seemed they were in a hurry to attend a party. “I saw a woman inside the vehicle holding a cake, suggesting they were going to a function.”

The Uganda Police spokesperson, ACP Rusoke Kituuma confirmed the fatal shooting and urged the public to be patient as investigations unfold.

“We have formed a team to search for him. Once he is found, we will apprehend him,” Kituuma said. “A search operation is underway to locate him.”
