Over 70 opposition supporters defect to NRM in Nebbi

A section of over 70 oppositon members who defected from their different opposition parties in a photo moment with Nebbi NRM leaders

Nebbi, (UG):- As the country prepares for the 2026 general election, over 70 members from the different opposition political parties seeking for change in development in Nebbi District and Municipality defected to the National Resistance Movement ruling party on Monday.

While receiving the defected members at GAF Gardens, the NRM Chairperson for Nebbi district Mr Kermundu George Adubango applauded the new members for joining the ruling party which he said was a good gesture of good leadership by the ruling party.

“As the chairperson of the NRM I am the happiest person for having received the opposition members who have defected to the National Resistance Movement party which is a very big achievement to us as the mighty National Resistance Movement party” Adubango said.

He noted that in accordance with the rules and regulations made under the NRM party constitution, all Ugandans irrespective of their ethnic identity, religion, birth economic status, race, and disability among others from time to time qualify to become a full member of the National Resistance Movement party.

“As now new members of the National Resistance Movement ruling party, who have presented themselves to work together with NRM I do applaud you all and encourage you to preach the gospel of unity and loyalty to the ruling National Resistance Movement party” he said.

Nebbi Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon Hashim Suleiman also during the function added that the coming in of the new members to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party is a clear indicator that there is a true spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation among the people of Nebbi district who are willing to work together for a common cause of development.

He noted that the defection of the opposition members from the Forum for Democratic Change, National (FDC) Unity Platform (NUP) and Uganda People Congress (UPC) parties to the National Resistance Movement party have come in timely as the political environment in the district is soon heating up ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Hon Hashim appealed to the defected opposition members to take advantage of government programs such as Emyooga Parish Development Model (PDM) among others if they are to uplift their well-being.

Collins Orom Jalacida, the LCIII chairperson of Erussi Sub County who crossed from the opposition said he did not regret his decision and action of crossing to NRM since he believes he has joined the party that is pro-people as far as development was concerned.

“I express my gratitude to the leadership of the National Resistance Movement and the office of the Resident District Commissioner Nebbi for championing the mobilization and network that has made me join the National Resistance Movement party that has now made me a free man and can now convince the government to help me in the area of service delivery for my people of Erussi Sub County in Nebbi district that have been long have been left behind in terms of government development,” Jalacida said.

He urged his fellow opposition members who are still in other opposition parties to join the National Resistance Movement and work together to develop Nebbi since leadership is all about service delivery.

Furthermore, Nbbi RDC Mr Abark Robert during the same function, said since his main role is to mobilize the party and government by giving a sense of direction, he believes the defection of the opposition members to the National Resistance Movement party will mobilize more opposition members to join National Resistance Movement party and develop the district.

He appealed to the local leaders in the Nebbi district to always be a unifying factor for all by working together regardless of their party affiliation if the district is to develop. He added that as sons and daughters of Nebbi District, it is time for all to become patriotic carders in the district by working for our common good in order to bring unity, peace and development for a socio-economic transformation of the district.
