Police officer dies over excessive alcohol drinking

Apac, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Apac District have launched an investigation into the sudden death of 40-year-old detective constable Obua Robson, an officer attached to Apach Central Police Station.

On Sunday, December 22, 2024, at around 3 pm, Obua was found lying dead in a nearby maize garden within the police barracks.

Preliminary reports from the neighbourhood indicate that Obua, known for his heavy drinking, was found with a bottle of locally brewed alcohol beside him.

Rogers Kapere, the Apac District Police Commander, confirmed the death, stating that he had counselled the deceased the day before his passing, urging him to reduce his alcohol consumption.

“It is true, we’ve lost Detective Constable Obua. He has been found dead next to his accommodation in Amun. All of Saturday I was with him and took him through counselling sessions with OC CID,” Kapere said.

“But it is mostly depression which most of our officers are suffering from. As we talk now is a big problem and we try handling it through guidance and counselling but sometimes we don’t see much change,” he added.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, told DailyExpress that the crime scene has been re-examined and documented, and relevant witnesses have been interviewed.

“The deceased’s body has been transported to Apac General Hospital’s mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Our condolences to the bereaved family and call for calmness as they await the post-mortem results,” Okema said.

He however reaffirmed that Detective Constable Robson had a history of heavy alcohol consumption, and unit commanders had previously counselled him about this behaviour.

In a separate incident in Alebtong district, a nine-year-old boy, Ojuka Aron, was found hanged on a mango tree, allegedly after his mother, Amony Eunice, stopped him from selling improperly dried maize.

Police visited the scene, recovered and exhibited a rope, and handed the body over to relatives for burial.

Meanwhile, in Oyam District, police are investigating the suspected drowning of a two-year-old girl, Adong Precious. It is reported that on December 21, while her mother, Alum Sandra, was preparing meals, Adong went to sleep but was later found drowned in a swamp by a neighbour who had gone to fetch water.

The body of the deceased has been taken to Anyeke Health Center 4 for a post-mortem examination.
