Kotido, (UG):- Government of Uganda has earmarked Shs180 billion towards the construction of the Karamoja Peace and Technology University (KAPUTU) in Kotido District, the first-ever varsity in the Karamoja Sub-region.
The decision was made during a special cabinet meeting held at State House Entebbe on December 16, where President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who also serves as the university’s Founding Chancellor, chaired the meeting. Vice President Jessica Alupo, the university’s Deputy Chancellor, also attended.
During the meeting, Museveni reportedly directed the ministry of finance to commit Shs180 billion towards the construction of the university that is being championed by the Catholic Church of Kotido diocese under Rt Rev Dominic Eibu.
Bishop Eibu in his letter dated December 18, 2024, said the Uganda Episcopal Conference lauded the government for providing the money in the 2025/26 financial year. “Therefore, KAPATU is a game changer in the great scheme of things and as such, it is a special university that is designed to transform the region,” he said.
The construction of the university was launched on August 18, 2023, during which Vice President Maj Rtd Jessica Alupo described it as one of the assets that will end the criminal activities among the Karachunas and also other cattle rustlers from the Ateker speakers in the neighbouring countries of Kenya and South Sudan.
The Cabinet’s approval marks a crucial step towards realizing the vision of KAPATU, promising to bolster educational opportunities and promote peacebuilding in the Karamoja region. The President believes the university will foster peace and boost education in the Great Lakes region.
Once completed, the institution will offer computer science and applied technology, oil, gas and metals industry and education courses.
Others are peace and security studies, environment, agriculture and veterinary medicine, health sciences, business and entrepreneurship and law, among others.
