Kabale, (UG);- The Territorial Police in Kabale District have arrested a 35-year-old maid on charges of aggravated torture after she was filmed in a viral video torturing a 4-year-old girl in the late hours of Friday night.
Police identified the victim as Tumwekwase Claire, 4, who was allegedly tortured by Tumuhirwe Precious, in an incident that reportedly occurred on the night of 27th December 2024, at around 01:00 hours, in Kikoko Zone, Namataba Cell, Kirinya Ward, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.
In a police statement on Saturday evening, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the arrest of Tumuhirwe who he said is currently detained at Kabale CPS, pending transfer to Kampala where the crime was committed.
“The victim, a 4-year-old girl identified as Tumwekwase Claire, was allegedly tortured by the suspect, Tumuhirwe Precious, a 35-year-old female. The suspect, employed as a housemaid, fled the scene following the incident but has since been apprehended in Kabale District and is currently detained at Kabale Central Police Station. Arrangements are underway to transport her to Kira Division in Kira Municipality,” Mr Owoyesigyire stated.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victim’s father, Mr Mwesigwa Michael, a 35-year-old resident of Kikonko-Kirinya, has been the primary caregiver for his children following a separation from the children’s mother two years ago.
The suspect, who had been employed as a housemaid for four years, was brought in through a recommendation from mutual acquaintances in Kabale District and had attempted to flee back to the southwestern Uganda district where police apprehended her.
Meanwhile, the victim is currently receiving medical treatment at Nsambya Hospital.
Owoyesigyire asserted that Investigations are ongoing and further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are underway to ensure justice is served for both parties involved.
“The Uganda Police Force condemns all forms of violence, particularly against children, and remains committed to ensuring justice is served. We urge the public to report any suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police station,” he said.
