Entebbe, (UG):- A joint operation led by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, with support from Entebbe Police, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) security, and local leaders Friday uncovered a significant consignment of counterfeit currency and fraudulent goods in Entebbe Municipality, Wakiso District.
The raid followed months of investigation after the State House Anti-Corruption Unit received a tip-off in May and October 2024 about a suspicious consignment at Entebbe International Airport.
Authorities kept the shipment under close surveillance until December 17, when it was smuggled out of the airport and traced to a motor vehicle garage in Entebbe.
On December 27, 2024, a search of the garage yielded 40 large and medium metallic boxes containing counterfeit US dollars estimated at $2 million.
To deceive their intended victims, the fraudsters added soil to the boxes to mimic the weight of authentic shipments. To hoodwink their would-be targets, the fraudsters added soil in the boxes to exaggerate their weight.
In addition to the fake currency, investigators found several bulky boxes designed to resemble goods in transit. However, these boxes were filled with useless items, including empty soda and beer crates.
So far, three suspects have been arrested, and efforts are underway to apprehend others linked to the operation.
Brigadier General Henry Isoke, head of the State House Anti-Graft Unit, emphasized the team’s unwavering commitment to combating fraud and protecting citizens and foreign nationals from criminal schemes.
“We will continue working with all relevant agencies to dismantle networks of individuals who extort money through fraudulent and fake transactions,” he stated.
The Entebbe fake dollar discovery highlights the ongoing efforts of Ugandan authorities to crack down on corruption and financial crime in the country.
