Lira City, (UG):- Lira City female workers’ councillor, Hon Sarah Awor Angweri, has accused the Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Lira City, Lawrence Emmy Egole, of frustrating her intention to contest, allegedly to favor her opponent.

Ms Awor recently declared her intention to contest against Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng for the Lira City Woman Member of Parliament seat under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in the 2026 general election.

Speaking at a press briefing at Gracious Place Hotel in Lira City, Awor claimed that Egole’s actions to suppress her are being backed by Health Minister Dr Jane Aceng, whom she is set to compete against in the NRM primaries for the party flag in the 2026 general election.

“I want to assure my electorate, my followers, and my voters in Lira City that I will not bow to any political intimidation or suppression, whether through my opponent, the minister, or otherwise,” Awor said, adding; “. Of course, I’m going to contest against her in the NRM primaries. I want to look into the camera and tell her I’m not scared of her. And if she wants to use the court, the police, or any other means to suppress me, I am not scared of her.”

“I also want to tell the Resident City Commissioner for Lira City, Mr. Lawrence Egole, that whatever he wants to do to me, I am not scared of him. Who is he? I can only be scared of God, not any other human being. This is our time, and it’s a generational call. Tomorrow, when we look for people like them who are fighting us and they’re not there, who will replace them? So we shall not fear them, and we are going to fight to the last dot.”

Ms Awor also warned corrupt leaders within Lira City to take note, stating that as long as she is alive, she will always fight for a corruption-free Uganda until the perpetrators of theft of taxpayers’ money are punished.

Awor’s Recent Arrest

Awor, 40, a vocal politician known for confronting area leaders over corruption in implementing USMID projects, was recently arrested alongside Daniel Okello, 34, the speaker of Lira City West Division, over allegations of inciting violence against officials.

The incident occurred on December 17, 2024, during an inspection of the Adyel Children’s Park construction site at Junior Qatar in Lira City. The park is one of the Shs37 billion World Bank-funded projects under Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructural Development (USMID), with the implementation contract awarded to Abubakar Technical Services and a December 31, 2024, deadline for handover.

The accused allegedly stormed the site and began mobilizing residents to attack local leaders, including council representatives.

On December 19, 2024, Awor appeared before Chief Magistrate Joe Fay Adoko, who remanded her to Lira Central Prison until January 9, 2025. She was later granted bail.

In response to Sarah Awor Angweri’s accusations, Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Lawrence Egole stated that the matter is currently in court and should proceed through the legal system. He explained that Awor’s arrest stemmed from her actions during the monitoring of the Adyel Children’s Park project, where she and Speaker Okello disrupted a lawful exercise despite not being part of the official monitoring team.

Egole denied any personal campaign against Awor, emphasizing that the law applies equally to everyone and that their actions warranted police intervention.

Attempts to get a response from Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng regarding Awor’s claims were unsuccessful by press time, but Bonny Otucu, the minister’s political assistant, told DailyExpress that the minister, who is also the Woman MP for Lira City, remains focused on serving her people and is not concerned with who chooses to contest against her.

“For now, Minister Jane is concentrating on issues that impact the electorate rather than engaging in petty fights about who wants to contest against her,” Otucu stressed.
