Bukedea, (UG):- Residents of Bukedea District gathered at Akuoro Village to commemorate the third memorial service of Moses Olemukan Ocom, the late District LC5 Chairperson, who passed away on December 17, and laid to rest on 27th December 2022.
Attendees described him as a charismatic leader with a deep commitment to Bukedea and its people.
Hon. John Bosco Ikojo, Member of Parliament for Bukedea County, delivered an emphatic speech during the service, praising Olemukan as a passionate and unifying leader. “He was a beacon of strength, unity, and hope for the people of Bukedea,” Ikojo said.
Ikojo emphasized that Olemukan’s legacy should not be taken for granted, noting his decisive and action-oriented leadership. “He was an icon behind many of the district’s achievements. To the family, I urge you to remain united, as your father advocated for unity in Bukedea and the Teso region,” Ikojo added.
He also appealed to the district leadership under Hon. Akol Mary to support Olemukan’s family: “Some of his children have completed their studies; when job opportunities arise, please be considerate towards them.”
Ikojo commended Akol for continuing Olemukan’s initiatives, particularly her role in the construction of seven secondary schools in collaboration with Members of Parliament.
Turning to politics, Ikojo called for maturity and unity among Bukedea residents. He addressed claims by Omoding Peterson, who alleged that Ikojo had agreed to step down after two terms: “I am here for 2026. Being Chairperson of the National Economy Committee my qualifications could see me elevated to Minister of Finance and Economic Development. President Museveni has maintained me as Chairperson with the Speaker’s approval,” Ikojo stated.
Omoding, speaking as a clan leader, called for a peaceful transition: “I request my brother to hand over peacefully and exit the stage while he is still loved, rather than being forced out.”
Hon. Akol Mary, the current District Chairperson, applauded Olemukan for mentoring her during his tenure. “He groomed me into leadership when he appointed me as his Vice Chairperson. Now, as District Chairperson, I am committed to fulfilling my duties effectively,” Akol said.
However, she expressed discomfort with individuals using Olemukan’s name for political gain. “I dislike hearing his name being used as a manifesto tool for fame,” she stated.
Mr. Ejiet Michael, a retired primary headteacher, reflected on Olemukan’s transformative tenure. “He spearheaded the creation of 16 new sub-counties and established seven secondary schools, including Akuoro Seed Secondary School. We extend our gratitude to the MPs of Bukedea and the LC5 for keeping Olemukan’s vision alive,” Ejiet remarked.
Ms. Akiror Loyce, Olemukan’s eldest daughter, expressed the family’s appreciation for the overwhelming turnout. “This gesture shows how much people loved our father because of his deeds,” she said.
Several speakers highlighted Olemukan’s generosity and inclusivity. Mr Obalang Nathan recalled how Olemukan supported community events by providing over 1,500 chairs and tents for burials, weddings, and other ceremonies at no cost.
“In weddings, he would donate 50 kilograms of rice, 10 kilograms of meat, and offer a free car for the bride and groom,” added Mr Ocheger John Stephen of Kasera in Kamutur.
The service, led by clergy from the Reform Anglican Church and headed by Mr Okiror Robert, underscored the deep impact Olemukan had on Bukedea. “He is greatly missed, especially by women, for championing their issues,” Okiror said.
