Lira, (UG):- Authorities and experts have provided valuable tips to the general public on how to stay safe on the road and reduce accidents in 2025.

According to the authorities, the public needs to adhere to traffic rules, wear seat belts, avoid speeding, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Senior driver Daniel Odongo highlighted the importance of following speed limits and practicing defensive driving. He noted that the main reason for road accidents is often carelessness on the road and a lack of respect for road usage requirements.

“My advice to you is to practice self-respect because anyone on the road is a potential victim. Avoid over-speeding. Focus on your windscreen and your side mirrors to avoid accidents,” Odongo said.

Kalungi Fred Kabuye, an educator with the National Drug Authority, also urged road users to avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“We need to keep ourselves safe. My advice is to stay calm while on the road. Secondly, don’t drink and drive or use drugs and substances. Make sure you get enough rest before embarking on a long journey because fatigue impairs your ability to drive safely. Life is lived only once. Once lost, it can’t be regained. Remember, the lives of other road users also matter,” Kalungi said.

Similarly, Irene Chelangat, the North Kyoga Regional Traffic Officer (RTO), encouraged pedestrians to remain vigilant and prioritize road safety. She advised pedestrians to use designated crossing points and wear reflective clothing at night to enhance their visibility.

“To pedestrians: as we walk on these roads, always face oncoming traffic. This allows you to make a judgment in case of any danger. Before crossing the road, always check left and right. If it is clear, cross the road. At night, wear reflective clothing so that riders or drivers can see you. Lastly, we urge people to be self-disciplined,” Chelangat said.
