Eng Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim, President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Thursday delivered a robust New Year’s address providing insights into the federation’s accomplishments in 2024 and offering a glimpse into the strategic goals for 2025.

Flanked by key FUFA officials, Magogo’s speech delivered at a press briefing held at the FUFA Complex in Mengo, highlighted both progress and future opportunities, particularly concerning East Africa’s involvement in hosting significant football tournaments.

“For us, we dream big,” Magogo began, outlining a grand vision that involved Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania working together to host the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

“We had a dream that we shared with our neighbors, Kenya and Tanzania, to host AFCON 2027. Of course, there were doubting Thomases, but we were able to convince the three heads of state, and when we sold our idea to CAF, they were convinced,” he remarked confidently.

The FUFA president noted that work is already underway to enhance the region’s sporting infrastructure, especially in preparation for hosting CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027.

“Already, there is work ongoing in as far as sporting infrastructure, and this will go a long way in improving the level of stadia in the region,” Magogo added.

He further urged the private sector to seize the opportunity, emphasizing the potential benefits in hospitality, events, and other related industries. “I call upon the private sector to embrace this golden opportunity as East Africa hosts both CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027.”

The president’s address also touched on Uganda’s ongoing efforts to tackle long-standing challenges in sporting infrastructure. He expressed optimism regarding the Government’s commitment to improving facilities.

“Mandela National Stadium returned to use last year, and the second phase of renovation will start soon. Hoima Stadium is already ahead of schedule, and I’m confident the facility will be ready by December this year,” he revealed.

In addition to Hoima, Magogo shared positive updates about other key projects. “Work at Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium has started, and there has been some work at Kyambogo University Training Facility. Makerere University will commence soon,” he said.

Highlighting the government’s proactive role in funding sports infrastructure development, including the MTN-Omondi Stadium and Masaka Recreation Ground. “Money has also been earmarked for Kakyeka Stadium,” he added.

The president also spoke of the considerable effort being put into the preparation of training facilities, particularly in light of the upcoming CHAN tournament.

“With CHAN coming, there is massive work going on at Wankulukuku, KISU, and Kadiba Training Facility,” he confirmed.
