Kampala, (UG):- The Deputy Press Secretary to the President of Uganda, Hajj Faruk Kirunda, has strongly refuted claims circulating on social media about new appointments to the leadership of the Electoral Commission.
The allegations which made rounds via social media on Thursday morning suggested that President Museveni had appointed Retired Principal Judge, Justice Yorokamu Bamwine as the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, with former Minister Syda Bbumba as his deputy.
However, in an official statement shared on his official platforms, Hajj Kirunda categorically dismissed these reports as false and unfounded.
“The General Public is called upon to regard as FAKE NEWS the social media story indicating that H.E @KagutaMuseveni has appointed Hon. Justice Yorokamu Bamwine to head the Electoral Commission and to be deputized by Hon. Syda Bbumba,” Kirunda posted.
He assured Ugandans that any such significant announcements, including appointments to critical institutions like the Electoral Commission, would be communicated through official and credible channels, not social media speculation.
The rumours sparked widespread discussion online, with netizens debating the potential implications of such appointments for the country’s electoral process but Kirunda’s swift response seems to have quelled the misinformation.
The clarification from the appointing authority comes at a time when Uganda is gearing up for the 2026 general elections and the leadership of the Electoral Commission remains a topic of keen interest, as the body plays a pivotal role in ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.
At the time of filing this story, there was no official announcement regarding changes to the leadership of the Electoral Commission.
