Kampala, (UG):- Speke Resort Convention Centre Munyonyo, one of East Africa’s premier conference centres popularly known for hosting high-level international events is yet again set to host the African Union (AU) Summit on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Strategy and Action Plan for 2026–2035.
The Extra-Ordinary Summit scheduled for January 9th to 11th, 2025, will bring together top policymakers, agricultural experts, and heads of state from across the continent to deliberate on strategies to transform Africa’s agrifood systems.
Under the theme “Sustainable Agri-food Systems for a Healthy and Prosperous Africa,” the summit aims to address some of the continent’s most pressing challenges, including food security, climate change, and agricultural innovation.
The AU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, Mr Josefa Sacko highlighted the importance of this summit, saying, “Africa’s future depends on sustainable agricultural development. This summit will provide a platform for leaders and stakeholders to collaborate and create innovative solutions that will drive progress and prosperity for all Africans.”
Delegates at the summit will explore key topics such as sustainable farming practices, the integration of technology into agriculture, regional trade in agrifood products, and strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change on agriculture.
Additionally, they will assess the role of youth and women in driving agricultural transformation and promoting inclusive economic growth.
The first day (January 9) will be dedicated to a meeting of the Ministers responsible for Agriculture, Rural Development, Water, and Environment.
On January 10, there will be a Joint Session of Ministers of Agriculture, Rural Development, Water, Environment, and Foreign Affairs, focusing on the presentation of the draft CAADP Ten-Year Strategy and Action Plan and the draft Kampala CAADP Declaration.
The final day, January 11, will see the Assembly of Heads of State and Government convene to endorse both documents. This high-level assembly will include Presidents, Prime Ministers, and other senior officials from AU member states, along with Ministers, experts, and representatives from non-state actors, the media, academia, and development partners.
The Ugandan government has expressed pride in hosting the summit, emphasizing the country’s commitment to advancing agricultural development on the continent.
Hon Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries noted that “Hosting another major international event shortly after the Non-Aligned Movement and G77 summits will enhance Uganda’s reputation as a stable and credible nation.”
“This will boost investment and tourism while showcasing our leadership in fostering peace and development in the region,” he explained, adding that the summit is expected to draw over 1,000 participants, including heads of state, ministers, development partners, private sector representatives, and members of civil society.
The CAADP initiative, launched in 2003, has been a cornerstone of the AU’s efforts to accelerate agricultural growth, enhance food security, and improve nutrition across Africa.
This year’s summit will mark a crucial step in shaping a new 10-year plan that builds on previous successes while adapting to emerging challenges.
As the countdown begins, all eyes are on Tycoon Sudhir’s Speke Resort Convention Centre, which is poised to serve as the backdrop for a pivotal moment in Africa’s agricultural journey.
