The life and legacy of Tooro’s fallen musical icon Kigambo Moses Araali

The community in the Tooro Kingdom and Uganda at large is in sombre mood following the passing of its legendary musician, Kigambo Moses Araali, whose impact on the cultural and musical landscape of the region will forever be remembered.

Kigambo, 48, breathed his last breath on the evening of Saturday, January 04, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of soulful, educative music that spoke directly to the hearts of his people.

Known as the Entale Ya Tooro (The Lion of Tooro), Kigambo’s songs carried powerful messages of unity, cultural pride, and social values that deeply resonated with the Rutooro-speaking community and beyond.

His timeless songs, including Ekirale (The Legacy), Itaka Kintu Kikuru (Land is of Great Importance), and Mugaruke Omuka Abaana Bange (Come Back Home, My Children), continue to educate and inspire generations.

Kigambo’s songs highlighted the richness of the Rutooro language while addressing pivotal issues such as family values, cultural heritage, and community development. Kigambo’s music wasn’t just entertainment it was a bridge to reconnect the people of Tooro with their roots.

As condolences pour in from family, friends, and fans, Kigambo’s legacy shines brightly. His music will remain a beacon of hope, pride, and unity for the Tooro community and all who listen to his profound artistry.

A Life Well-Lived: The Biography of Kigambo Moses Araali

Kigambo Moses Araali was born on March 1, 1977, in Nyakabara, Kijuma Ward, Kyenjojo Town Council, Mwenge South, Kyenjojo District, Uganda. A member of the Abasiita Clan, with the totem Obusito, Kigambo grew up immersed in the traditions and culture of Tooro.

Despite limited formal education, Kigambo possessed a natural intelligence and charisma that made him a respected figure in his community.

After completing his Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) at Nyantungo Primary School in 1992, he pursued vocational training in motorcycle and motor vehicle mechanics, as well as entrepreneurship.

Kigambo’s ability to communicate fluently in Rutooro and Runyoro, along with his fair grasp of English, Luganda, and Swahili, further enhanced his influence as an artist and cultural leader.

Musical Journey and Achievements

Kigambo’s music career began in 2002, focusing on Folk-Pop and Fusion styles. Over the years, he released seven groundbreaking albums that captured the essence of Tooro’s culture and the challenges facing Ugandan society.

  1. 2003 – Akadaara: Empowered youth to identify and promote their talents, with the standout song Itaka Kintu Kikuru.
  2. 2005 – Twekobe: Addressed political struggles in Uganda, featuring Ekitukufeera (What We Are Struggling For).
  3. 2007 – Ekirale: Highlighted the importance of leaving a lasting legacy, with its title track becoming a cultural anthem.
  4. 2009 – Otalyebw’omuka: Urged communities to reconnect with their roots.
  5. 2012 – Ekibiri Kinu: A reminder of human vulnerability and the need for resilience.
  6. 2015 – Ekacoliikwa Kara: Celebrated the abundant beauty and tourism potential of the Tooro sub-region.
  7. 2017 – Tooro K’okasemera: Paid homage to the beauty and pride of Tooro, the “Pearl of Africa.”

Cultural Leadership and Legacy

Beyond music, Kigambo was a passionate cultural leader. He served as the Talents Development Director at Engabu za Tooro (Tooro Youth Platform for Action), a UNESCO-accredited cultural NGO. Under his leadership, the organization achieved significant milestones, including pioneering weekly community theatre in Western Uganda and fostering cross-cultural exchange programs.

Kigambo’s cultural troupe earned national and international recognition, hosting Germany’s Big Band Orchestra in 2005 and placing 4th in the 2004 National Music, Dance, and Drama competition. He was instrumental in shaping the artistic landscape of Tooro and promoting local talent.

Awards and Recognition

Kigambo’s contributions to music and culture earned him numerous accolades:

  • 2007: Pearl of Africa Music Awards – Best Cultural Artiste of the Year.
  • 2008: Pearl of Africa Music Awards – Best Western Artiste of the Year.
  • 2008: East Africa KISIMA Music Award – Best Video Uganda.
  • 2009: Rotary International Vocational Award for integrating development themes into entertainment.
  • 2015: Tooro eyanyenkya hati Gold Medal.
  • 2017: TUMA Award – Best Regional Artist, Western Uganda.
  • 2018: Media Practitioner Award, presented by Bishop Robert K. Muhiirwa of Fort Portal Diocese.
  • Appreciation souvenir from the Bunyoro Kitara Basiita Clan.

A Lasting Legacy

Kigambo Moses Araali will be remembered as a cultural icon who used his voice to uplift his community, celebrate Tooro’s heritage, and inspire positive change. His music remains a testament to his brilliance, his love for his culture, and his unwavering commitment to the people of Tooro.

As Tooro mourns the loss of one of its greatest sons, Kigambo’s legacy continues to thrive through the timeless power of his music and the lives he touched.
