Kampala, (UG):- The Territorial Police at Nateete in Rubaga Division, Kampala on Monday, January 6, shot dead one suspect in foiled a robbery attempt targeting two Fortebet betting branches in the area.
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 7, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SSP Patrick Onyango, identified the deceased as 25-year-old Kayongo Benard Nadumba, a resident of Kita6wuluzi, Mutundwe in Rubaga Division.
Nadumba’s accomplices, five in number, are currently on the run and a manhunt is on to have them apprehended.
According to the KMP spox, it is alleged that on January 06, Nadumba and his accomplices, armed with pangas, stormed a Fortebet branch along Nateete Masaka Road where they managed to steal an unspecified amount of money before heading to another branch at Nateete Business Center to continue their robbery spree.
“On January 6, 2025, Nadumba and his accomplices, armed with pangas, attacked the first Fortebet branch along Nateete Masaka road, making off with an unspecified amount of money. They then proceeded to another Fortebet branch at Nateete Business Center to rob more money,” SSP Onyango said.
Police were alerted and promptly dispatched a response team to the scene. Upon arrival, the suspects attempted to flee. “Upon spotting the police, the suspects attempted to flee, and Nadumba was shot to neutralize him,” he added.
He [Nadumba] was rushed to Mulago Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after several hours. “Police have collected statements from witnesses and recovered a wallet and a bunch of keys from the scene,” SSP Onyango explained.
Police said the remaining five suspects managed to escape and are currently being pursued by the Regional Flying Squad from KMP South.
“We have launched a manhunt for the other five suspects,” Onyango asserted, urging the public to provide any information that could assist in their arrest.
The police commended the quick response of the team and reassured residents of their commitment to combating crime in the area and emphasized its commitment to “ensuring the safety and security of the public.”
