Traffic diverted as Uganda readies for AU Summit at Speke Munyonyo

Kampala, (UG):- Uganda’s Traffic Police Monday announced expected road versions on major routes along the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway ahead of the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Summit on Agriculture scheduled for January 9 to 11, 2025, at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

The AU summit, focused on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) strategy and implementation plan for 2026–2035, is expected to attract over 2,000 participants, including dignitaries from 49 AU member states.

Speaking to journalists at Naguru Police Headquarters, Traffic Police spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, confirmed that several roads leading to and around the summit venue will face temporary closures and diversions to ensure security and ease the movement of dignitaries.

“To ensure a smooth flow of traffic and the safety of the delegates, certain roads leading to Speke Resort Munyonyo will be restricted from public access during the summit. Traffic will be diverted accordingly, and we appeal for public cooperation during this period,” Mr Kananura said.

He highlighted that the primary summit route will be the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, running from Entebbe International Airport through Kajjansi Interchange to Speke Resort Munyonyo. This corridor, he said, will be strictly regulated, with diversions implemented whenever delegates are on the move.

Traffic diversions and restrictions

Kananura elaborated on specific traffic control measures to be implemented during the summit which include:-

  • Mpala: Traffic will be diverted to the Entebbe Highway, with the expressway reserved exclusively for summit delegates.
  • Kisubi: Vehicles will be redirected to Nakawuka Road for access to Kampala to ease congestion along Entebbe Road.
  • Kajansi Flyover: Motorists will be diverted from accessing Munyonyo or the expressway and directed towards Lugala, Zana, and the city centre.
  • Serena-Kigo and Mutungo-Kitiko Traffic Lights: Diversions will be enforced at these junctions with limited public access.
  • Munyonyo Roundabout: A security checkpoint will screen all vehicles, and non-summit traffic will be diverted to Salama Road and Buziga Road.
  • Northern Bypass: Diversions will occur at the Busega Flyover and Sentema, Nansana and Busega interchanges, with traffic police holding flow at 50-meter distances from these points.

The Traffic Police boss emphasized that no motorcycle will be permitted to access Kajansi, Munyonyo, or the summit venue, urging bodaboda riders to seek alternative routes.

For airport travellers, Kananura advised those using Entebbe International Airport to plan their journeys well in advance to avoid delays caused by the diversions.

“We advise passengers with flights during this period to set off early to avoid missing their flights due to the traffic diversions. Traffic officers will be available to guide the public,” he added.

Police assured the public that all diversions will be implemented temporarily during the movement of delegates and reopened immediately afterwards.
