Kawempe to rename road after fallen MP Ssegirinya

Kawempe, (UG):- Authorities in Kawempe Division have unanimously passed a resolution to rename one of the roads in Kawempe North constituency after their former area MP, Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed away Thursday at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala.

Kawempe Division Mayor, Mr Emmanuel Sserunjogi moved the motion during a special sitting held Friday, January 10, 2025, to honour the late MP for his immense contribution to the development of the people he represented.

Councillors of parishes in the Kawempe Division quickly adopted the motion but urged that it is better to recognize and appreciate like Ssegirinya when they are still alive. They advocated the MP’s legacy to be remembered with a health centre or ward at Kawempe Hospital.

The committee selected was tasked to verify the road located at 34X which when approved will be named Ssegirinya Road in honour of the fallen MP.

Formerly Lord Councillor for Kawmpe Division, Ssegirinya who until yesterday (Thursday) was Kawempe North MP passed away at Lubaga Hospital where he was undergoing treatment after his health condition worsened at the beginning of the year.

The outspoken NUP legislator was elected to Parliament in 2021 but spent much of the time in and out of the hospital undergoing treatment even when he was released from Kigo prison.

Ssegirinya often said that the origin of his sickness started at the government prison facility where he and fellow MP Allan Ssewanyana (MaKindye West) were jailed for more than a year, over ‘trumped up’ murder charges in connection to deadly attacks that claimed over 20 lives in the Masaka Sub Region.

The two were released on bail in February 2023 but Ssegirinya has since been undergoing treatment in various facilities in Uganda, Kenya and the Netherlands.

Ssegirinya, 36, will be buried on Sunday,12 January 2025 in Masaka District.
