Buvuma, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Buvuma District are investigating the tragic drowning of one Stephen Nanyungi, a 45-year-old fisherman, who reportedly drowned himself in Lake Victoria waters after a fight with the husband of a woman he was allegedly dating.
Nanyungi, a resident of Gayaza village in Ziiru Ward, Lyabaana Town Council, is said to have jumped into Lake Victoria on Tuesday afternoon, shocking his community.
According to Ssezibwa Regional Police spokesperson, Ms Hellen Butoto, it is alleged that the events leading to Nanyunji’s death began during the Christmas festivities when Ms. Amida Tebazire, the wife of Mr. Ronald Mubiru, left her husband’s home to visit her parents in the island district for the festive season.
Tebazire stayed at her parents’ home until January 4, but instead of returning to her marital home, she reportedly went to Nanyungi’s residence. On January 6, Mr Mubiru received reports that his wife had been seen at Nanyungi’s home.
“When he went to Nanyungi’s home, Mubiru found his wife seated with the adulterous man. A fierce fight broke out between the two men,” a local leader from Lyabaana Town Council, who preferred anonymity, told police.
Area residents intervened to break up the fight, escorting Tebazire away and condemning Nanyungi for engaging in a relationship with a married woman.
Nanyungi later confided in his friends that he felt betrayed by Tebazire, who he claimed had not disclosed her marital status. “He started distributing his personal belongings amongst us (his friends), but we thought it was one of his usual jokes,” a resident recounted.
Tragically, at around 1 pm on Tuesday, January 07, the deceased shocked everyone when he jumped into the lake and killed himself. His body was retrieved by local fishermen and handed over to his relatives for burial.
Ms Butoto confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding Nanyungi’s death are ongoing. The incident has left the community in shock and raised concerns about the emotional toll of personal conflicts.
