60-year-old murder suspect commits suicide in police cells

Kaliro, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Kaliro District are investigating the circumstances under which a 60-year-old man allegedly committed suicide while in police custody.

The deceased, identified as Matagala Stephen, a resident of Budine Nyanza Village in Kaliro Town Council, had been arrested on January 10, 2025, in connection with a murder case and had been in custody awaiting further legal procedures.

Busoga North Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed the incident which occurred yesterday (Monday), January 13, 2025, at around 1:05 a.m. Preliminary investigations suggest that Matagala used a string to hang himself while other suspects in the cell were asleep.

“The other suspects were awakened by his struggle and managed to untie the string, causing him to fall to the ground. Thinking he was unconscious, they alerted the police officers on duty. Unfortunately, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was confirmed dead,” Kasadha said.

Police secured the scene and initiated investigations to establish the circumstances under which the deceased obtained the string and to determine the exact sequence of events.

“A coroner was called to the scene, and a postmortem examination was conducted. The body was subsequently handed over to the deceased’s relatives for burial.”

The incident sparked discussions on the safety of individuals in police custody and the measures in place to prevent such occurrences.

But Kasadha assured the public that further investigations are ongoing to uncover any lapses in procedure or negligence that may have contributed to the incident.

“We remain committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in handling such cases, and we urge the public to remain calm as we conduct a thorough investigation,” he said.
