Construction works begin on Namagumba-Nalugugu road in Sironko

Sironko, (UG):- The construction of the 39-kilometre Namagumba-Budadiri-Nalugugu Road in Sironko District has officially commenced after the compensation of affected residents and property owners along the route.

The project was launched in June last year by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja. It is expected to take 36 months to complete and will cost over UGX 129 billion, funded by the African Development Bank. Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) contracted Shandong Luqiao Group Co. Ltd to lead the construction works.

Nambozo Florence Mayonga, the State Minister for Karamoja Affairs and Woman MP for Sironko District revealed that the construction company has set up its camp in Mutufu, with road works starting from that area.

She highlighted that the road will not only ease the movement of people and goods but also boost the tourism sector, as it connects to Mt. Elgon National Park.

Nambozo further noted that other project that may come along includes the construction of Mutufu Market and the upgrading of Budadiri Health Center IV, aimed at improving the livelihoods of the local community.

Rev. Jackson Magombe, the chairperson of the district grievance management committee, confirmed that 62% of compensation for project-affected persons has been completed.

He explained that compensation for residents between Nalugugu and Nakiwondye has been finalized, with only a few cases between Nakiwondye and Namagumba still pending. He assured the public that the process is ongoing.
