Mitooma, (UG):- The National Unity Platform (NUP) fraternity is soaked in a sombre mood following the brutal murder of Nimusiima Anselm, an outspoken activist of the opposition party and boda-boda rider from Ishaka town, Bushenyi District.
Nimusiima, 28, was killed on Friday night in Katenga, Mitooma District, under circumstances described as premeditated and violent.
According to the NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, Nimusiima was lured into a trap by someone pretending to be a passenger. Upon reaching a secluded area, he was ambushed by a group that strangled him and attacked him with sharp objects, leaving him dead.
“According to our teams on the ground, Nimusiima, who was a boda-boda rider in Ishaka town was lured into a trap by someone who pretended to be a passenger, and on reaching some dark spot, they found others who strangled him and hit him with sharp objects, leaving him dead,” Bobi Wine posted in a statement shared via his official X account.
The NUP principal further revealed that Nimusiima had received threats for openly supporting NUP and the #PeoplePower movement. His bold identification with the opposition reflected in his dress and activism, reportedly made him a target.
“We have been told that Nimusiima has been getting threats for defiantly identifying with us through his dress code and activities. At only 28 years of age, he joins the many comrades violently murdered, for apparently giving themselves to the struggle for a better country,” added Bobi Wine.
The NUP leader decried what he termed as the lack of action by authorities, referencing past murders of activists such as Lochoto Ambrose Machete, Ritah Nabukenya, and Dan Kyeyune. He expressed skepticism about the police’s willingness to investigate Nimusiima’s killing but remained hopeful for justice.
“We would have called on the police to carry out investigations if only they had shown the least interest in investigating the murders of comrades like Lochoto Ambrose Machete, Ritah Nabukenya, Dan Kyeyune, etc etc. But we remain hopeful that one day, there will be justice for all these crimes,” he said.
Supporters and party members have expressed outrage over the incident, demanding accountability and greater protection for opposition activists. The murder of Nimusiima adds to the growing concern over the safety of those aligned with the opposition in Uganda.
