Kampala, (UG):- Car enthusiasts and Street Racers have commenced the year in style with a meet & greet to entertain their fans as they aim at having an action-packed year.
The event held Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Towfiiq Oil Petrol Station next to Mandela National Stadium at Namboole, brought together the fastest and most skilled racers from across the country displaying speed, drifting and drag racing to the amazement of revellers.
Organized by the Street Racers Club Uganda (SRCU) an association which unites them, adds to the annual menu of motor racing lovers in Uganda and East Africa at large.
The race featured a variety of actions designed to test the limits of both drivers and their machines. Challenging participants to navigate a complex course with tight turns, obstacles, and precise manoeuvres.
All these races were against the clock, which saw cars pitted against each other in head-to-head sprints, showcasing raw speed and acceleration over a set distance.
SRCU was founded in 2016 by Charles Kakaire aka Carx Ray Gamdoost, of Busoga origin from Jinja District in Eastern Uganda. Carx Ray as commonly called by his peers said, “The founding of this Sport was anchored on his passion for speed, a dream that took root way back in 2008 during his high school years”.
Internationally and specifically in America, street-racing tradition dates back to the 1950s and has long been a staple of Hollywood movies, including films such as “Rebel Without a Cause” (1955), “American Graffiti” (1973), and “Grease” (1978).
Street races typically involve racers and spectators meeting at a popular gathering place, often on a relatively remote street in an industrial area.
Here they decide where to race; they then convoy to the site, where a one-eighth or one-quarter-mile track is marked off. Cars line up at the starting line, where a starter stands between them and drops his or her hands to begin the race.
Street racing can either be spontaneous or well-planned and coordinated but Sunday’s race was well-planned and coordinated starting with the formal acquisition of the racing track, advertising as well as clearance from police and other authorities.
SRCU works in partnership with the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda – FMU which organises maiden the Pearl of Africa Rally Championship which attracts rally drivers from mainly East Africa and the African Continent at large.
