How Kenyan-based hackers target Ugandans in new wave of WhatsApp hacking

Police Spokesperson, ACP Rusoke Kituuma, addressing the media on Monday at the weekly joint security press briefing at Naguru Police Headquarters.

Kampala, (UG):- The Uganda Police Force Monday issued a warning to the public cautioning about an increasing wave of cyber fraud involving Kenyan nationals targeting Ugandan WhatsApp users.

The Fraudsters, police said, reportedly hijack WhatsApp accounts of unsuspecting users and deceive them into sending money and spreading false financial claims.

The Police Spokesperson, ACP Kituuma Rusoke while addressing the media at Police Headquarters Naguru on Monday revealed names of several individuals who have been identified as key perpetrators in these scams.

“We have received numerous reports regarding hackers and fraudsters targeting mobile telephone users. We wish to notify the public that the following individuals and their contact numbers should be noted,” ACP Rusoke said, identifying the suspects as; Howell Kirui (+254735002953), Dominic Kosek(+254754033882), one Ezra (+254787947086) and Kibet Kinandet (+254105218443).

How the Scam Works

ACP Rusoke explained that these fraudsters employ a tactic where they block a user’s WhatsApp account and then send a verification code, tricking them into re-registering by demanding money.

“These individuals have a tendency of blocking your WhatsApp account and sending you a verification code to re-register, claiming you need to send money for the registration process,” he warned.

“Once they gain access to your WhatsApp, they may send messages to your contacts and groups, falsely informing them that you have received millions of shillings,” ACP Rusoke added. “They further persuade you to send additional money with promises of receiving large sums on your MTN line via Safaricom.”

As a caution to the public, Mr Rusoke urged vigilance amid this wave of cybercrime and warned users to avoid engaging with such individuals.

“Always question how you can win money in a competition you never entered. Be sceptical of messages promising instant wealth,” Rusoke questioned, urging those who fall victim to report to the authorities immediately.

“We encourage victims to report these scams to police and also make an appeal that people desist from falling prey to these schemes,” he advised.

He further emphasized the importance of using official communication channels provided by service providers and avoiding any unverified requests regarding financial transactions.

“People should stick to official communication channels provided by service providers. MTN and Airtel have official contact numbers. If anyone calls you on a number other than those provided by your service provider, treat it as a scam,” Rusoke advised.
