Speeding policeman knocks ex-Minister Maganda’s wife dead

Kampala, (UG):- The Police in Kampala are investigating a fatal accident that claimed Ms Florence Taaka, the wife of former Minister of State for East African Community (EAC) Julius Wandera Maganda after she was knocked dead by a speeding vehicle driven by a police officer.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening at Kitukutwe along the Kiwologoma-Nakwero Road in Kira Division, Wakiso District.

According to police authorities, Ms Taaka, a prominent National Resistance Movement (NRM) mobilizer, was pinned between two vehicles in the crash.

The accident involved a Toyota Premio, registration number UAX 937P, driven by Police Constable Wilber Nuwagaba, with Assistant Superintendent of Police Achilles Atwebembere as a passenger, and a Toyota Harrier, registration number UAM 516B, which was being driven by Taaka’s husband, Mr Maganda.

Eyewitnesses who saw the crash happen say the Toyota Harrier had pulled over by the roadside, and Taaka had stepped out to load food items she had purchased from a nearby stall.

As she was placing the items in the car boot, the speeding Toyota Premio lost control and rammed into the stationary vehicle, fatally pinning her between the two cars.

Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, confirmed the sequence of events, stating that the Toyota Premio was moving in the same direction as the Harrier when the driver lost control and crashed into it. The impact was devastating, killing Taaka on the spot.

A shocked Mr Maganda collapsed upon seeing his wife’s lifeless body and was rushed to a nearby hospital unconscious.

Speaking moments after regaining consciousness, Maganda recalled the horrifying moment, explaining that he had been inside the car waiting while his wife placed food items in the boot. He heard a loud bang and, upon stepping out, was met with the tragic sight of his wife crushed between the vehicles.

Taaka, 45, was widely respected in Busia District, where she served as the Chairperson of the NRM Women’s League. She was also known for her passion for farming, specializing in poultry, cattle, and coffee growing.

Many who knew her described her as a woman deeply committed to uplifting others, particularly women in rural areas.

By press time, Taaka’s body was at Mulago Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that investigations into the accident were ongoing, with the officers involved under scrutiny.

The tragic loss of Taaka has left a deep void in the NRM and the Busia community, where she was regarded as a role model and a champion for women’s empowerment.
