Uganda hosting landmark conference on African Genomics

Kampala, (UG):- The Republic of Uganda is currently hosting the 15th African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG) Conference, a major event focused on accelerating genomics research across the African continent.

The conference, taking place at Speke Resort Munyonyo from February 3rd to 7th, has brought together over 300 prominent scientists, policymakers, and industry experts from Africa and beyond.

Held under the theme “Harnessing Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for African Genomics,” the conference, organized by the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit in partnership with Makerere University, aims to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and data science can transform genomics research, particularly in early disease diagnosis, precision medicine, and drug development tailored to African populations.

Professor Moffat Nyirenda, Director of the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, underscored the need for collaboration in advancing genomics research.

“The future of genomics in Africa depends on building strong and sustainable partnerships,” he stated, adding; “This conference provides an invaluable platform for researchers, institutions, and policymakers to collaborate and drive innovation.”

With genomics research still in its early stages in Africa, the conference will focus on several key areas, the event addresses the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomics, including the need for fair data governance and Africa-led policy frameworks.

Another critical aspect of the conference is the role of AI and data science in genomics, which promises to unlock new possibilities in disease prediction and drug development.

Professor Segun Fatumo, Director of KidneyGenAfrica and Chair of the Conference, highlighted the transformative role of AI in genomics. “This conference is not just about exchanging ideas—it’s a call to action for scientists, policymakers, and industry experts to harness artificial intelligence and unlock Africa’s genomic potential,” he said. “By doing so, we can develop medical treatments that are effective for all populations, regardless of ethnic background.”

The AfSHG Conference is also recognizing outstanding contributions to genomics research in Africa. It offers interactive poster presentations, networking sessions, and affiliate society meetings, providing ample opportunities for collaboration and inspiration for the next generation of African genomic scientists.

The event will climax with the launch of the Uganda Society for Human Genetics and Bioinformatics (USHGB), an initiative led by early and mid-career genomics researchers. The USHGB aims to build local expertise, foster mentorship programs, and enhance regional collaboration in genomics and bioinformatics research.

Founded in 2003, the African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG) has been a leading force in equipping African scientists and policymakers with the tools and knowledge needed to advance genomics research.

The organization continues to amplify Africa’s role in the rapidly evolving field of genomics, helping shape a future of more precise, inclusive, and accessible healthcare across the continent.
