Kampala, (UG):- The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has officially nominated renowned Ugandan singer Kalifah Aganaga, born Mukiibi Sadat, as its flag bearer for the upcoming Kawempe North Constituency by-election.

Aganaga’s endorsement was confirmed by FDC party President, Mr Patrick Oboi Amuriat during a ceremony held at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Kampala, on Wednesday, February 05, 2025.

“We have today successfully concluded the internal process of identifying candidates who will hold our flag in the upcoming Kawempe North By-election,” the party announced via its social media platforms.

The FDC Electoral Commission also announced Mr Sebunya Sharif as its flag bearer for the LCIII Councilor by-election for Kazo Angola and signalled confidence in both candidates’ ability to represent the people of Kawempe.

Speaking right after his official endorsement, Aganaga expressed his appreciation to the FDC and pledged to champion youth empowerment, improved social services, and enhanced economic opportunities for his constituents.

“I am ready to be a voice for the people of Kawempe North and advocate for their needs in Parliament,” he said.

The singer’s entry into politics underscores the growing trend of musicians and celebrities joining elective positions in Uganda. Aganaga is expected to face stiff competition from other political party candidates and independent aspirants.

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has already confirmed Hajjati Nambi Faridah, the daughter of 1st National Vice Chairman AlHajj Moses Kigongo as its candidate.

Other parties, including the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), and Democratic Party (DP), are yet to declare their candidates.

The Kawempe North MP by-election, scheduled for March 13, follows the passing of the former MP, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, who died at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala on January 9.
