Police hunt for suspects in fatal shooting of Keshwala employee

Jinja, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Jinja District Kiira have intensified efforts to hunt and apprehend murder suspects following the fatal shooting of an employee of Keshwala Group in Jinja City on Monday evening.

The tragic murder, according to Kiira Region Police Spokesperson SP James Mubi occurred in Bugembe – Wanyama Mutekanga zone where Emma Opus was working as a daily sales representative under V.G Keshwala and Sons Limited, a mobile money and agent banking firm under the Keshwala Group.

According to police reports, on a fateful day, the deceased was on his lawful operational duty at the Airtel service centre in Bugembe-Wanyama when the culprits travelling in a yet-to-be-established Toyota Premio attacked and shot him. Police say they are going to study their CCTV cameras to identify the vehicle.

The perpetrators reportedly moved out of the vehicle and allegedly shot Emma Opus before fleeing the scene of the crime with at least twenty-two million (Shs20m) and the deceased’s mobile phones that are currently being tracked by highly skilled police phone trackers, according to SP Mubi.

Opus, a born of Amuria district, was rushed to the nearby health centre before referring him to the Jinja regional referral hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 7 pm on Monday.

“Emma was initially rushed to Alshafa hospital in Mpumudde and later on referred to Jinja main hospital for specialized treatment but at around 7 pm he was pronounced dead by the medical team,” SP Mubi said in a statement released Tuesday, February 04, 2025, over the incident.

Upon learning about the attack, Bugembe police station with the backup of CPS Jinja swiftly responded to the scene of the crime and recovered a motorcycle (UFJ 397Q) belonging to the deceased, a cartridge, among other exhibits of evidential value. However, police have today Tuesday revisited the scene of crime to follow up on new leads that could be key in prosecution-guided investigations.

SP Mubi advised people to avoid moving with large sums of money and other valuables without security from the Uganda police force or other private security companies.

“As a risk management measure, it’s incumbent upon members of the public dealing in bulk cash or valuable items to always seek professional escort duties from police or guards from private security companies. Such financial neglect or omission should absolutely be abandoned and discouraged,” Mubi emphasized.
