Museveni appoints Flavian Zeija as new Deputy Chief Justice

President Museveni has appointed Justice Flavian Zeija as the new Deputy Chief Justice.

Kampala, (UG):- President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Hon Justice Flavian Zeija as the new Deputy Chief Justice of Uganda, the State House Presidential Press Unit announced Friday evening.

“In exercise of the powers vested in the President by Article 142 (1) and (2) of the 1995 Constitution, His Excellency the President, Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni made the following new appointments to the judiciary,” the PPU stated in the official press statement, naming Hon Justice Flavin Zeija as the new Deputy Chief Justice and Justice Muzamil Mutangula Kibeedi as a Justice of the Supreme Court.

Zeija, 55, who until his appointment has been Principal Judge of the High Court replaces Justice Richard Buteera, who is set to retire as Deputy CJ in April after reaching the mandatory retirement age (70).

Additionally, the President also made several other key judicial appointments including 8 new justices to the Court of Appeal/Constitutional Court, and 21 judges to the High Court in acting capacity for a period of two years from the date of assumption of duty.

These include; the appointment of Judge Musa Ssekaana and Lady Justice Ketra Katunguka, plus six others as Constitutional Court Justices, while Sarah Lingu Siu, is now a High Court, along with 10 others.

The PPU said, “The President has forwarded the names and CVs of all appointees to Parliament for approval, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a strong and effective judiciary in Uganda.”

This publication understands that the latest judicial appointments were part of the last activities conducted by the 6th commission led by Justice Benjamin Kabiito whose term in office ended on January 21, this year.
