7-Year-Old pupil killed in tragic Kibuku road crash

Kibuku, (UG):- A seven-year-old pupil has been confirmed dead after she was Monday morning knocked by a speeding vehicle at Kotolo Trading Centre along the Mbale-Iganga highway in Kibuku District.

The tragic incident, which claimed the life of Safina Kadondi happened at around 11 am, sending shockwaves through the local community and reigniting concerns over road safety in the area.

According to police’s preliminary report, it is reported that a silver Toyota Noah (UBP 457K), driven by 47-year-old Ssempiri Moses, struck Kadondi, a Primary Two Pupil at Kalampete Primary School.

“The young girl was attempting to cross the road when she suddenly dashed from the right side to the left, leading to the fatal collision. She was rushed to a nearby clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival,” police said, quoting eyewitness accounts.

Kadondi lived with her grandfather, Amis Gavakumu (67), in Buyerya zone, Kalampete parish, Tirinyi rural sub-county. A heartbroken Gavakumu reported the incident to the authorities, mourning the tragic loss of his granddaughter.

The driver, Ssempiri Moses, was apprehended and is currently in police custody pending further investigations and police confirmed that his vehicle too, was intercepted at Nampido and later taken to Tirinyi police station for inspection.

Kibuku District Traffic Officer, IP Angella Max Remy, alongside her team, swiftly responded to the scene, documenting evidence, sketching the crash site, and collecting statements from independent eyewitnesses to piece together the events leading to the accident.

The pupil’s body was later taken home, and the family were advised to delay burial until a postmortem examination is conducted.
