Minister Amongi shines at UN Ministerial Forum in New York

New York, (USA):- Uganda’s Gender and Labour Minister, Hon Betty Amongi Akena shone so brightly at the United Nations Ministerial Forum in New York, championing change with a vision so clear, and ringing Uganda’s progress at the global stage.

“In Uganda, our legal, policy, regulatory, and institutional framework has enabled us to achieve the goal of social inclusion,” Hon Amongi stated, explaining how the government has prioritized health, education, and macroeconomic measures to stimulate growth.

This, Amongi said, has led to the absorption of unemployed youths in the private sector, attracting investors through prudent economic and investment policies that have attracted direct foreign investment, stimulating GDP growth, employment opportunities, poverty reduction and social inclusion.

The Minister said through a multi-dimensional approach, they have reformed labour laws, attracted investment by private sectors in the Social Protection industry where they are offering health insurance.

She added that the sector is also implementing lending and savings programs targeting vulnerable groups, partnering with financial institutions to offer affordable financial services to groups such as women, youths, persons with disabilities, older persons, refugees and the rural poor.

“We have provided affordable access to public services such as water, institutions to dispense justice (police), decentralizing court sessions to rural areas and offering online services with cheap internet and technology that has supported the rural poor to access many services,” she said.

Hon Amongi also added that the Government has initiated skilling hubs which train school dropouts and uneducated youth for free in all trade sectors.

“With free primary, secondary, and vocational education, we are equipping the youth for a brighter future. Innovation grants are also available to help young entrepreneurs scale up their successful projects,” she added.

Hon Amongi reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to macroeconomic policies centred on job creation, ensuring that all sectors contribute to employment opportunities while offering free social services to combat violence against women and children.
