Kampala, (UG):- The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) on Tuesday released the results of the 2024 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) national examinations under the old and new curriculum, the latter coming with a new grading system that left many struggling to interpret the grades.
In the 2024 UCE, UNEB revealed that 98% passed and qualified for the O’level Certificate, but many of the top-performing schools in the country came from the central region, as usual.
Statistics obtained from the UNEB portal ranked Uganda Martyrs Secondary School Namugongo as the top-performing school in 2024 UCE, closely followed by St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Naggalama, and Seeta High School.
The ranking is based on the number of students who scored distinctions (A and B grades) under UNEB’s newly introduced grading system.
Below is the list of the best-performing schools in the 2024 UCE

Understanding the New UNEB Grading System
This year’s UCE results were released under the revised grading system, which replaces the traditional aggregate-based ranking with a competency-based assessment.
Under the new grading system, candidates are graded as follows:
- A – Exceptional Achievement
- B – Outstanding Performance
- C – Satisfactory Performance
- D – Basic Understanding
- E – Elementary Understanding
The new system aims to focus on skills development rather than cutthroat competition among schools. Despite initial confusion among parents, UNEB and the Ministry of Education maintain that the reforms will enhance education quality and better prepare students for future careers.
Revised Grading System
Candidates are assessed as follows:
- A – Exceptional Achievement (Equivalent to D1, D2)
- B – Outstanding Performance (Equivalent to C3, C4)
- C – Satisfactory Performance (Equivalent to C5, C6)
- D – Basic Understanding (Equivalent to P7, P8)
- E – Elementary Understanding (Equivalent to F9)
As the results continue to spark national discussions, schools, parents, and students alike are adapting to this new method of assessment. Congratulations to the top-performing schools and students!
