Kampala, (UG):- The second round of the Pepsi University Football League kicked off with a thrilling encounter between Muteesa I Royal University and Makerere University Business School (MUBS), with the hosts securing a 1-0 victory, avenging their earlier defeat in the group phase.
In their first meeting, MUBS edged Muteesa 1 with a narrow 1-0 win, thanks to a well-taken strike from Mbabazi Joe Worrick. However, the Royals came out determined in this fixture, pressing the visitors from the first whistle.
MUBS struggled to cope with the high intensity of Muteesa 1’s play. They resorted to a long-ball strategy, which nearly paid off, but Arthur Mazige’s shot in the penalty area sailed over the bar.
The first half ended goalless, with neither side registering a shot on target, and both teams content to cancel each other out.
As the game progressed, MUBS tried to control the tempo, attempting to absorb the relentless pressure from Muteesa 1.
However, they failed to create clear-cut chances. In the 65th minute, a promising run by Jjunju Eddie saw him set up Busuulwa on the right. The winger’s shot, however, went wide of the near post.
With time running out, Muteesa 1 made their breakthrough in the 88th minute. Sserwanga Musa scored a stunning header from a Busuulwa Patrick cross, handing the Royals the lead and the win.
MUBS’ attempts to respond in the dying moments came to nothing as they left the pitch empty-handed.
The victory sees Muteesa 1 top Group F with 6 points, while MUBS remain on 4 points. The group is rounded out by Mbarara University of Science and Technology, with just 1 point.
The University Football League continues with more action across various groups in the coming days.
Today, Wednesday, February 12, Group C will take center stage as St. Lawrence University hosts YMCA at Kavule Grounds. The following day, February 13, Kampala University will face Gulu at Luzira Prison Grounds.
