Ex-Police Chief, IGP Okoth Ogola dies at 85

Kampala, (UG):- The former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Boniface Eron Okoth Ogola had died at the age of 85, the Uganda Police Force confirmed Friday afternoon.

Ogola, who served at the helm of the force from 1981 to 1985, breathed his last today at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, according to a statement by the current IGP, Mr Abbas Byakagaba.

Byakagaba extended heartfelt condolences to Ogola’s family and assured that the police force will honour his legacy with the respect and dignity he deserves.

“His contributions to law enforcement and national security will forever be remembered within the force. He served with dedication and left an indelible mark on Uganda’s policing history,” Byakagaba stated.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, SSP Patrick Onyango said funeral arrangements for the late IGP will be communicated in due course.

Beyond his tenure as IGP during the Obote II regime, Ogola also served as a personal assistant to Erinayo Oryema, Uganda’s first African Inspector General of Police.

The people of Tororo, Ogola’s birthplace, joined the entire country on Friday in mourning the loss of a remarkable leader, remembering him as a pillar of integrity whose impact extended beyond his years in uniform.

As the nation awaits details of his final sendoff, tributes continue to pour in for a man who dedicated his life to service, discipline, and the protection of Ugandans.
