Kayunga, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Kayunga District have launched investigations into a case of aggravated robbery and attempted murder after a prominent businessman was shot and injured during an attack on his shop.
The incident occurred Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at around 11 p.m. when the assailants, armed with AK-47 rifles, targeted the victim identified as Wahabu Ssemujju and his workers at the shop located in Gombolola Cell, Nazigo Town Council, Kayunga District in what appeared to be a robbery attempt.
Ssezibwa Regional Police spokesperson, SP Hellen Butoto, confirmed the attack in a statement on Thursday and said police have since jointly registered a case of aggravated robbery and attempted murder.
Ms Butoto stated that during the attack, the gunmen reportedly fired multiple shots at Ssemujju as he took cover under the shop counter. While they missed their main target, he sustained an injury to his arm. The attackers then fled with a smartphone and a bunch of keys.
“They shot several bullets aiming at him as he took cover under the counter and missed the target, except for injuries on his arm. They then fled with one of his worker’s smartphones and a bunch of keys,” Ms. Butoto said.
Police responded swiftly to the scene and rushed the injured businessman to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Ms Butoto said investigations are actively ongoing as authorities work to identify and apprehend the suspects.
