Kigezi, (UG):- President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has warned against sectarianism, emphasizing that any leader or individual engaging in divisive practices should be arrested.
The president made the remarks while concluding his Parish Development Model (PDM) assessment tour in the Kigezi sub-region, where he engaged with local media representatives.
During the interaction, Museveni addressed concerns about sectarian tendencies affecting governance and development. Citing his personal experiences from his school days, President Museveni shared how his education was supported by a Muganda man who bought cattle from his family, highlighting the interdependence between communities.
The President stressed that those found guilty of promoting sectarianism should face legal action and be removed from leadership positions if concrete evidence exists against them.
“The law is very clear: sectarianism is a crime. Those who engage in such practices should be arrested, prosecuted, and removed from leadership positions, especially if there is concrete evidence against them,” Museveni stated.
The President announced that the government would also increase PDM funding from UGX 100 million to UGX 200 million, if the UGX 100 million is utilised well and it is a success, explaining that the initial allocation was aimed to support coffee plantations but could also be used for other income-generating activities, such as pig farming and poultry.
He emphasized the government’s flexibility in monitoring the success of the current funding before making further adjustments.
President Museveni also clarified that PDM money is not only for landowners but also for those without land. He noted that in some regions, beneficiaries have hired land using PDM money and they are progressing.
The President’s PDM tour in the Kigezi sub-region was part of his continued monitoring of the implementation and impact of the initiative, which seeks to uplift Ugandans from subsistence to commercial production.
The PDM, introduced as a key government intervention, focuses on improving household incomes and fostering economic transformation at the grassroots level.
The President’s remarks on Saturday underscored his administration’s zero tolerance for divisive politics, urging leaders and citizens to promote unity and national development.
