Pallisa, (UG):– The business community in rural trading centres across Agule County in Pallisa District, is celebrating the installation of solar-powered security lights courtesy of the area MP aspirant, Mr Herbert Okudel Okello in a development initiative aimed at boosting nighttime business and enhancing security.
Stephen Okilaje, a mobile money agent in Opadoi Trading Center, expressed relief, stating that before the lights were installed, he was forced to close early due to the fear of being robbed.
“Before, I would close my business early, but since the solar lights were installed yesterday, I was able to transact until 10:00 PM,” Okilaje said. “This is a rare and commendable initiative by Mr Okello. “Unlike some aspirants who think people only need handouts, Okello is empowering us by improving our business environment.”
Mary Agote, a fishmonger, highlighted the financial relief the lights have provided. “The lights are strategically placed in our evening business area, saving us from buying torches that cost UGX 1,000 and only last two days,” she said. “In our mukene (silverfish) business, Okello has helped us save UGX 2,000. He truly has better plans for the poor.”

Mr Okello, who is eyeing the NRM primaries, emphasized that his background in economics and business gives him a deep understanding of the challenges hindering economic growth, one of which is workplace security.
“So far, I have installed solar lights in Opadoi, Akisim, Okisiran, Omotoi, Nyakoi, and Agurur trading centers to boost the night economy,” Okello said. “I urge the people to enroll in government programs such as PDM, Emyooga, UWEP, and GROW loans to uplift their businesses.”
He also called on the government to lower the minimum loan amount for women under the GROW initiative from UGX 4 million to UGX 500,000, noting that many small-scale female entrepreneurs struggle to meet the requirements for higher loan amounts.
John Okwii, a boda boda rider at Akisim Trading Center, praised the initiative, stating that the presence of security lights allows them to work late into the night without fear. “With security lights, businesses can operate longer, reducing cases of fraud and shop break-ins,” Okwii said.
Esther Amulen from Boliso Sub-County urged Okello to extend the initiative to primary schools, while Julius Oluk, a parish councillor, lauded his efforts. “People believe in leaders who help them earn their own money rather than those who dish out UGX 2,000 during campaigns,” Oluk noted.
Mr Okello reaffirmed his commitment to extending the project to all trading centres in phases, emphasizing that lighting up the business hubs is just the beginning of his broader economic empowerment agenda.
