Policeman held over fatal shooting of suspect’s brother during arrest

Kamuli, (UG):– A police officer in Kamuli district has been arrested for allegedly causing the death of a 19-year-old man during an attempted arrest, authorities have confirmed.

According to Busoga North Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha, the officer, identified as No. 38057 Sgt Etapu Jimmy, attached to Balawoli Police Post, was apprehended following the fatal shooting of Kawongolo Diliisa, a resident of Butalage II, Kawaaga, Balawoli Town Council.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, February 17, 2025, at around 4:00 AM. Sgt Etapu had booked out to arrest a suspect, identified as Badaaza Joseph, on allegations of assault in Balawoli Town Council.

However, as the officer attempted to apprehend Badaaza, the suspect raised an alarm, prompting a scuffle as bystanders attempted to intervene. In response, Sgt Etapu fired two shots in what he claimed was self-defence. Tragically, a stray bullet struck Kawongolo, the suspect’s brother.

Kawongolo was rushed to Kamuli General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following the incident, a team of police officers, led by the Officer-in-Charge of the station, responded to the scene. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing, and a postmortem examination is yet to be conducted.

Police authorities have assured the public of a thorough probe into the matter as they work to establish accountability for the tragic loss of life.
